John Terry reveals Chelsea squad were in on Jose Mourinho’s plans to flout UEFA suspension by hiding in a skip

legend admits the squad were aware of ’s plans to flout his UEFA suspension by hiding in a skip in order to deliver a team talk at Stamford Bridge.

The Portuguese boss received a two-match ban from Chelsea’s previous knockout win against , meaning he was banned from Stamford Bridge for the visit of Barcelona in 2005 for the Blues’ quarter-final clash against the La Liga giants.

Mourinho claimed he was watching the tie at a nearby leisure club but he recently revealed to BeIN Sports for the first time that he was carted into Stamford Bridge in a metal container in order to give a team talk to his players.

With Mourinho admitting he broke the rules, Chelsea players are now free to talk about the incident for the first time.

And Terry has revealed that, far from the belief that Mourinho made a spur-of-the-moment decision, the Chelsea squad were actually fully aware that he would make his way to the dressing room.

‘I think if it was anyone else but the manager at the football club then it would have seeped out,’ Terry told

‘But everyone was so scared of him and respected him so much that it didn’t leak out at all.

‘Obviously he told you [BeIN] that he was in the skip and he had to be wheeled from the outside into the dressing room but it’s quite a long way at Chelsea.

‘He was banging on the skip, he was desperate to get out for some air. When he came in, him being him, he just jumped out a delivered a speech to us. Tactically he was on point but it was just a surreal moment.

‘We knew [he was going to do it] because he told us in the meetings so it wasn’t a surprise. He was there [Stamford Bridge] prepped and ready well before we got in I think because the UEFA officials were hovering and expecting him to be there.

‘He would go to limits like that to make sure we had our manager with us. He was like a father figure and you just felt safe with him around.’

Barcelona held a 2-1 lead from the first leg but Chelsea raced out of the traps and into a 3-0 lead with goals from Eidur Gudjohnsen, Frank Lampard and Damian Duff.

Ronaldinho equalised from the penalty spot before scoring one of the most famous goals in Champions League history, when he curled an exquisite effort past Petr Cech.

However, captain Terry found an all-important fourth goal 15 minutes from time to book Chelsea’s passage through to the semi-finals.

Despite their superiority in the Premier League, Chelsea were knocked out by Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool in the semi-finals. The Reds would go on to lift the trophy.
