FRESNO, Calif. (AP) – Children were in the vehicles of both the suspected shooter and the victim during a California highway shooting, authorities aid.

The California Highway Patrol says an alleged gang member fired multiple shots at another vehicle around 6 p.m. Friday while at a red light on Highway 41 in Fresno, The Fresno Bee reported.

Two children under the age of 10 were in the back seat of the victim’s car and one juvenile was in the back seat of the suspected shooter’s vehicle, highway patrol spokesman Mike Salas said.

The shooter possibly recognized the victim in the other vehicle and opened fire, Salas said.

The victim, a man in his 30s, was transported to Community Regional Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds to the neck and torso. He underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition.

A highway patrol unit eventually stopped the suspected shooter’s vehicle, which police said was traveling recklessly at speeds near 90 mph.

The 27-year-old suspected shooter, who was not immediately identified, was arrested and will face attempted murder and child endangerment charges.
